When is a bet not a bet? A day at the Iran races | Reuters

"He once won 30 million rials."

The really big bets happen at bigger tracks, particularly at the 10-000 capacity Gonbad-e Kavoos hippodrome in northern Iran.

Cleric Mahmoudi warned of the dangers of gambling.

"In negotiations with some sources of emulation , we finally managed to receive permission to bet on horses under certain conditions," said Ebrahim Mohammdzadeh, an official at Tehran's horse-racing committee.

To make it possible for spectators to take part, the Equestrian Federation of Iran sought permission from senior clerics known as "sources of emulation", to whom Shi'ite Muslims turn for guidance on moral issues.

MASS APPEAL

The 2,000-capacity Nowruzabad track off a major highway to the west of Tehran is the only track easily accessible to the population of the capital. Odds are not given before the race and returns are calculated afterwards.

"Last year someone won $75,000 there in a bet," a race official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Despite its limited availability, people from many walks of life crowd the "predictions" office next to the track in Nowruzabad where legal betting takes place inside a building where an electronic screen advertises: "Make a prediction, win a prize".

(Editing by Sonya Hepinstall)

However, three forms of gambling are permitted under Islam, said a cleric consulted on the matter by Reuters.

"The bettor makes gains easily, without working and this causes others to lose money with consequent dissatisfaction and grief," he said, pointing out one reason Islam regards gambling as "haram".

"I just lost 30,000 rials but I had a lot of fun," said fine arts student Tamanna, 30, showing her ticket printed with a line that says cash spent buying the ticket goes to support the horse races, rather than in the hope of winning.

After the revolution the idea fell out of favour and today there are only four racetracks in the country. I predicted correctly," said the 18-year-old.

THE BIG BETS

"I just paid 50,000 rials. "Big bets take place unofficially and the winnings are exchanged from hand-to-hand."

"I knew he would win. Not by "betting" on the horse, he insisted -- betting is illegal under Iran's Islamic law -- but by "predicting" Rio Collection would win.

"People are reluctant to place big bets with the prediction office," he said . "In a way we are donating this money to help develop the races."

Betting among individuals is not legal but still goes on.

People can also place bets on horses through the federation's website, but that misses out on the spectacle.

The Koran describes gambling as "evil, unclean and Satanic" and people found guilty of illegal gambling in the Islamic Republic can be sentenced to flogging and jail.

Inside, a dozen women, wearing obligatory headscarves, sit behind windows, taking predictions and paying out winnings. It hold races over a 10-week season each year.

Of the total money coming into the official betting office, some 70 percent is given out as winnings with the remaining 30 percent going to cover the costs of racing.

He had just won 200,000 rials (almost $20). Camel racing -- popular in some Arab countries across the Gulf -- is not a significant sport in Iran and archery has no great popular following.

The way it works is that jockeys authorise the horse-racing committee to place bets for other people on their behalf.

"I had a great time," Tamanna said. As well as a computer screen with race details, each has a basket into which they toss the takings.

. I hope I can win something," said Erfan, 15.

"All forms of gambling are haram (forbidden by Islam) except for horse racing, camel racing and archery," said Mohsen Mahmoudi, a cleric at a north Tehran mosque, adding that those manly, warrior sports were all encouraged by the Prophet Mohammad.

But technically, he added, only the archery contestants and riders of the horses or camels in the races are permitted to bet.

Prediction tickets can be bought for as little as 10,000 rials (around $1) with no official upper limit, although large bets are rare. But thanks to certain religious rulings, many race-goers are permitted to put money on the horses legally as long as they are "predicting" through official channels.

As the horses pass the finishing line, the spectators -- including dozens of women -- jump up from their seats near the track and rush to the predictions office to see how much they have won and place money on the next one.

NOWRUZABAD, Iran As Rio Collection galloped across the finishing line, Sardar hooted with joy and high-fived his friends.

In pre-revolutionary Iran, horse riding was considered an elite sport. By Mitra Amiri

Most of the people buying prediction tickets legally from the racetrack office did not seem concerned, however.

Under Islamic sharia law, gambling is generally seen as illegal and Sardar's wager, made with a friend, was actually not permitted. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi -- the last shah who was overthrown in the 1979 uprising led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini -- was a keen horseman and aimed to expand racing.

Wearing loose black trousers and speaking with a strong local accent, Sardar, a carpenter, said he chose not to buy prediction tickets as winnings were limited.

"I always buy prediction tickets from this office but my dad bets directly with others," he said

Michael Gill Racing Issues Statement

"The slippery slope is if the measurement or action taken is

going to be on when this occurs, as it may also involve others who

people feel are not an issue." McErlean wrote this in his email, a copy

of which I have in my possession.

Penn National knew that I had complained multiple times about the racing

surface. The vast majority went back to Penn National. This trainer was Stephanie

Beattie. Tell

me this, what is more controversial than telling the truth?

Not convinced yet? If you think Penn National cares about jockeys and

horses, why are they racing at 12:00 midnight in the middle of January

instead of 12:00 noon? Do you think it is colder at midnight than at

noon? Do you think it is more likely to have a frozen track in the

middle of January? Isn't it possible it is about making money? Otherwise

they would be racing during the day. Instead what I got was an anonymous

phone call to the Large Animal Protection Society. I was able to accomplish my goals because I believed they were

possible. They still had major issues two

months after I left. They want you in the Casino at

night.

The Commission and Dillon listed three separate complaints: 1) Penn

National, 2) Jockeys and 3) the HBPA. To my knowledge this was the only race track in the country where

all horses didn't get checked by a veterinarian before each race.

I went into racing knowing it was a business and I believed I could be a

champion.

They believed that the Commission had immunities that they could hide

behind. In fact in 2008, just one year before, it had fourteen fatal

breakdowns in two weeks. They have never come to my defense

because they are made up of horse owners and trainers that do not want

me in the industry because I am cutting up their pie. When the largest stable in the country moves in, it is cause for

concern. Therefore, I think this qualifies me to speak about the

business.

I will finish by telling you that in the purest sense I am a competitor,

I find no victory in cheating. Look back at all my years in

racing and tell me this isn't the truth. My understanding

is that they do vet check now, why didn't they then? I offered to have

the state vet at Penn National check all my horses on the grounds and at

my farm, Penn National declined. So the taxpayer would take the hit. Typically, trainers survive by

finding a new owner before the old owner goes broke.

I came into horse racing hiring the little guy and giving them an

opportunity to prove themselves. At the time,

horses stabled on the grounds did not get even a vet check before they

raced. What if

I told you he has just given a sworn deposition, under oath, that they

were never were dangerous? What jockey would know better if my horses

were sound than the jockey that was riding them all? How could any other

jockeys say anything if they didn't ride them? Also, what if Otero and

Jockey Clinton Potts just said under oath that they did not give anyone

express permission to use their names on the jockey petition?

. I said that I would, but that I would not use Clifton as I

felt he was an inferior jockey. They could possibly lose that license if they

were operating a dangerous track. But they blamed me, not the track.

So Krulock had the two top racing outfits in Penn National using his

jockeys. This is the exact

accusation I had made when I fired him. So that is how they came at me.

Penn National can't say they are concerned about horses and jockeys when

they don't even vet check horses on their own grounds. The barns are a

disaster and the track is dangerous, but the casino is just wonderful!

You tell me where Penn National is spending their money. This is the same organization that I have paid more

money into than any other person. I would not be

bought and I would not be intimidated, that is a dangerous combination

in horse racing.

I am no longer in horse racing, but I spent $51 million dollars from

1999 to 2009 on horses. They do not like cutting up their share of the pie. I knew at that moment that since

Krulock got me the stalls at Penn National that he could take them away.

MANCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Michael Gill Racing today made the following statement regarding horse

racing:

So, if you had a couple of Commissioners that you could manipulate, I

would say it was a hell of an insurance policy and defense Attorney

Augusto was the puppet master who protects the tracks and dials in the

Commissioners. I wasn't doing

anything special. They had the State of Pennsylvania do their dirty work and we

learned in last week's trial that Commission's lawyers warned them that

I could sue the Commission. Weeks later, Otero was suspended from

racing for making no effort for a horse to win. When you look at it, you see nothing but

locals. Want proof? Simply walk inside of the casino and then

walk out back to the stables where the horses live. It is also ironic that I was still able to race at Philadelphia

Park, but not at Penn National, even though both are governed by the

same Pennsylvania commission. I was in horse racing for 33 years and have been told

that I have had more starts and won more races than any horse owner in

history. I made $3.1

million dollars there in 2009. In fact Delahoussaye

still trained and he had his other owners buy my horses that wound up

back in the same stalls that they were in when I owned them a day

before. I claimed horses from people

that were cheating and winning races unfairly to defraud the betting

public. I was trying to create a path to

operating a successful business in the horse racing industry that I

loved so that other owners could do the same. I had raced over 1,400 starts in 2009 outside of Penn National

and only had one breakdown.

I guess miracles can happen.

You may remember reading Otero saying my horses were dangerous. I have spent my career defending myself

from the corrupt, with their fear of you hearing me. Those that wanted me out would have

given their eyeballs to have come up with a bad test to make it easy to

get rid of me. Only the Commission could take their

license away. Sore at Penn, sound at Philly?

At the trial, I listened to three Commissioners (Hamm, Hannum, and

Sweeney) and the Executive Secretary Dillon. He seemed to be very

proud of that letter. It was not a coincidence

that it is these three jockeys that led a boycott of riding my horses in

2009.

Penn National continues to be scrutinized for their unsafe track

conditions. This was more money than next the top 15 owners at

Penn National combined. They had nothing else. For all those

concerned, you have taken your best shot at me and I am still standing. By now it was a moot point. They raced a total of 820 times

during the year. On three

occasions Dillon happily informed the court that Penn National gave him

a letter telling him what a good job he was doing. Dillon also declared our innocence. Even when the

subject was about life and limb, he forgot. I made it possible for the

trainer to make money and the owners to make money, rather than have the

trainer survive by cheating the owner.

In fact they did not even investigate before or after ejecting me or

Adamo, not one of them. More money than any owner made at any one

race track that year. That is

not what I want.

The Commission's own investigators recognized the fact that the horses

were back running at Penn National and what I was saying was actually

true.

He has commented publicly about my horses breaking down. The president of

HBPA at Penn National at the time was Stephanie Beattie, my biggest

competitor. It is journalism, like

the recent New York Times article and a former ESPN interview,

that have made it difficult to stay in business and impossible for me to

come back by painting me as "The Most Hated Man in Racing" where I might

have been the most honest.

Now I am going to get really insidious. So why would they want me out?

Christopher McErlean is the Vice President of Gaming at Penn National. I noticed how one Commissioner after another on the stand

appeared more hesitant, guarded and confused than the one before.

My dream was always to win the Kentucky Derby; instead this has been my

living nightmare.

Those same complaining owners bought them, the same complaining trainers

trained them and the same complaining jockeys rode them. I have now

just introduced you to all the players.

I really tried to make a difference. They were cheating. Krulock then gave me Willie Otero to

ride all my horses and then hired Dana Whitney. I also quickly learned that it is possible for people to be

totally corrupt.

There came a time in late 2009 that I fired Willie Otero. Penn National operates

under a license, as I do. Since that wasn't possible, Krulock turned to what he

could control...the jockeys. I had a passion and a love for this industry. Then it became very clear. I am not kidding, read the transcripts. He was pulling

horses to prevent them from winning. There must have

been some magical wand that was waived to make them all instantly sound. To put this in perspective, if you combined all

of the race tracks across the country you might not have fourteen fatal

breakdowns collectively during a two week period. They then said in last week's trial that they never accused me of

having sore horses. He must have

forgotten about an email he sent on January 24, 2010, just before my

ejection, stating that my trainers, Adamo and Delahoussaye had 3 and 4

breakdowns respectively for the year. Every year the track

has had major issues with breakdowns. This was a horse that raced on the grass for

the first time, slipped and clipped heals. They sent Gail

Emerson to my farm. Do you think the trainers would

tell the owners that they lost their $40,000 claiming horse for $20,000

because they were cashing a bet offshore or would they say that Gill

made it a $40,000 horse because he was cheating? What do you think?

Let's move on to the National Horsemen's Benevolence & Protective

Association (HBPA). Krulock said that he could not do that because

Dana was riding first call for my biggest competitor, Stephanie Beattie.

I got into Penn National when John Krulock (agent for jockeys Thomas

Clifton and Willie Otero) offered me 49 stalls if I rode his Jockeys

first call. I'm

sure they were the jockeys, Krulock's jockeys, which was the reason for

Dillon's sudden loss of memory.

You would be interested to know how little these Commissioners know

about horse racing.

I'm no longer in horse racing so I have no motive to share my story

other than the truth.

Penn National Race Track in Grantville, Pennsylvania is, like other race

tracks, a closed community. She was accused of shock waving horses by her

foreman/boyfriend and her grooms, but wrote a letter, representing horse

ownership, to the Commissioner saying I was bad for racing.

So how did I get kicked out of Penn National? I just had 2,247 horse

races without a single bad test. Sometimes the thing that separates the

haves and the have-nots is opportunity. I claimed horses for $20,000 and won for $40,000. Penn National has me thrown out;

they knew they did not have a reason so they gave it to the Commission. It seems they rely heavily on reading The

Blood-Horse magazine. Again, that's seven

breakdowns at Penn National with 820 starts, and one out of 1,400 starts

at other tracks.

I spent $51 million dollars in horse racing, why would I need to cheat?

If someone had a better horse in the race, I would buy it. No

offense to The Blood-Horse magazine, but it is not ALL that these

commissioners should know.

It was my intent to have stayed in Horse Racing the rest of my life,

what better job to have than one that you love. As reported in the Thoroughbred Times, "It

was a surprise visit, and I found nothing wrong in the facility," said

Gail Emerson, a former trainer. There was actually one trainer with more total

breakdowns with only about 600 starts. I watched them go up on the

witness stand, one after another saying that I had done nothing wrong. I noticed how they looked frequently at him for approval

during trial.

All my horses were sold. I bought horses from the big

guys 90% of the time, not the little guys. I then asked to have Dana Whitney

ride on all the horses.

Every time I see my name it is followed by the word, controversial. Out of the 100 jockeys I am

going make a guess at the other two: Dana Whitney and Willie Otero. When he could not give me Dana Whitney, I fired him as an agent

and the jockeys he represents. In fact in a federal trial held last week, Michael Dillon, former Acting

Executive Secretary of the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission said

under oath that he spoke with three jockeys about their concerns, one

was Clifton and he just could not remember the other two. "It was clean, and the horses were in

good condition."

Penn National doesn't want you to pay attention to the horses; they want

you in the casino

How Trump's Taj Mahal Casino Went From ‘8th Wonder of the World’ to Closure After Years of Losses

A little over a year after it opened, the Trump Taj Mahal filed for bankruptcy and Trump's two other Atlantic City casinos followed suit the next year.

The Trump Taj Mahal Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was advertised as the eighth wonder of the world when it opened in 1990.

Though that multi-million dollar haul may sound impressive, gaming industry financial analyst Marvin Roffman says he knew at the time it wasn't sustainable.

"The man didn't pay us because he didn't have the money, bottom line," said Rosenberg.

Trump sold his interest in the Trump Taj Mahal in 2009. the letter that I didn't write," Roffman said. On his show, Leach said the casino made $2 million on its opening day.

"Some went bankrupt. The market just isn't there."

The whole spectacle was captured by Robin Leach, celebrity journalist to the stars. And it was faxed to Donald Trump. Michael Jackson was the guest of honor.

"We can't give back anymore. We survived because we were very busy in Atlantic City," Rosenberg said.

According to Roffman, Trump was so upset with Roffman's grim prediction for the Trump Taj Mahal that he called Roffman's boss. But he wasn't alone. After our last offer, which included medical, was rejected, it was simply impossible to find a workable path forward that would not have required funding additional investments and losses in excess of $100 million over the next year. But I want you to understand something. We're coming in as a group now,'" said Rosenberg.

Roffman said Trump called him the day after he bought the Trump Taj Mahal to get his advice.

Negotiations between the union and Icahn failed, so some Trump Taj Mahal employees went on strike this summer, prompting Icahn to close the casino for good.

Trump set his sights on Atlantic City after he had successfully completed the Trump Tower in Manhattan in the 1980s.

In Atlantic City, Trump bought three casinos: Trump Plaza, Trump Castle and the Trump Taj Mahal. You've taken everything from me that I've ever worked for," Baker said while on strike.

On his website this week, Icahn posted a statement about the casino's closure: "Today is a sad day for Atlantic City. He made promises when he came to the city. Trump has not been involved for many years and has been given great credit for his timing."

"I had a telephone call from Mr. But he said Trump didn't uphold his end of the deal.

Roffman said he then wrote a new letter to Trump, retracting his boss' retraction letter. Trump settled the suit out of court with no admission of wrongdoing.

Issues also arose between Trump and the hotel's contractors. I've got nothing else to give. And the very next day he called and said he wanted changes made to that letter ... The opulence, the size, the everything is really what's going to make the Taj Mahal the most successful hotel anywhere in the world," Trump told ABC News' Charles Gibson in 1990.

Roffman turned out to be exactly right about the Trump Taj Mahal. So I don't see, you know, him doing anything great for America."

But on Oct. The casino shut down at 5:59 a.m., Oct. You can't pay me off and not pay everybody else off. Trump's personal attorney and he said to me, 'What is this about a meeting?' I said, 'We want to get paid.' He says, 'Well how can I stop this meeting?' I said, "It's relatively simple. Despite our best efforts, which included losing almost $350 million over just a few short years, we were unable to save the Taj Mahal. But once the cold winds blow from October to February it won't make it. And I thought, 'This whole thing smells.' And it's very, very serious."

Rosenberg said he and six other unpaid workers banded together on behalf of the entire group and forced a meeting with Trump.

A person walks from the Trump Taj Mahal early on Oct. He said Trump didn't honor the financial obligations to over 100 contractors who helped complete the Trump Taj Mahal.

Trump told ABC News the day before the Trump Taj Mahal opened that he was out to get Roffman, saying, "When somebody does something wrong and says something wrong, and somebody's in a conflict position, I decided in this particular case to go after him."

Trump threw a grand opening party that seemed as lavish as the casino itself. "I don't believe in anything he says. Either make Roffman apologize publicly or fire him, Roffman says Trump told his boss.

Roffman also sued Trump for defamation of character. Then he took his money, and he left. I said, 'Okay. No casino in the world ever had a win anywhere near approaching that kind of number," said Roffman.

For Baker, there's no question about how he'll vote in November.

"The scale, Charlie, is what brings the people. Once we meet I have an obligation and I will stick to it. At the time I said, 'We always do a good job.' And I didn't get paid," Rosenberg said.

Last summer, Rosenberg shared his experiences of working for Trump at a Hillary Clinton campaign event in Atlantic City.. "The letter went out, and they fired me on the spot," Roffman said.

After several rounds of negotiations, Rosenberg said he and the other contractors settled with Trump for less than what they were owed with devastating results.

"I said, 'Well, why would you want to have three casinos? One is going to cannibalize the other,'" Roffman told ABC News' "Nightline." "And here was his response: 'Marvin, you have no vision. He bought the casino after Resorts International couldn't finish the construction. Some lost their businesses. He is not my choice," Baker said. This is going to be a monster property.' And those were the exact words."

Rosenberg said Trump owed him over $1 million. 10, 2016, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Roffman said what really worried him about the Trump Taj Mahal was how Trump had financed it -- with an extremely high interest loan.

Rosenberg said the Trump Taj Mahal job nearly cost him his entire company, which was contracted to provide glass, mirrors and doors. "He wanted changes made to that letter which would absolutely be against my -- of what I thought was going to happen. A judge awarded him $750,000.

Members of Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union, Tina Condos, a cocktail waitress at Trump Taj Mahal and Keith Fullmer, a bartender, shout early in the morning outside the closing Trump Taj Mahal on Oct. 10, 2016.

"He promised me, personally, if we did a good job, we would get paid. Like many of the employees at the Taj Mahal, I wish things had turned out differently."

It was Donald Trump's biggest and boldest real estate project to date.

In an emailed statement to "Nightline" about the Trump Taj Mahal closure, a Trump campaign spokesperson said, "Mr. 10, 2016, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Trump completed construction on the project and inherited all the union workers who had started building it.

"So I signed the letter. His friend and supporter Carl Icahn eventually took it on in 2014.

Roffman said his boss drafted a letter retracting what he'd said to The Journal and told him to sign the letter or else.

Later, Roffman went on to sue his employer for wrongful termination.

Charles Baker, who started working at Trump Taj Mahal 26 years ago, said the union clashed with Icahn over things like health benefits and paid lunch breaks.

"I will not vote for Donald Trump. He got the Trump Taj Mahal after its original owner, Resorts International, couldn't complete construction on it.

Trump Taj Mahal on opening day, April 5, 1990 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

"Had I known that Trump was going to take over the job, I would have never done the job," Martin Rosenberg told "Nightline."

Michael Jackson and Donald Trump at Donald Trump's Taj Mahal Casino opening on April 5, 1990 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Just weeks before the casino opened, Roffman told The Wall Street Journal, "When this property opens he will have had so much free publicity he will break every record in the books in April, June and July ... 10 at 5:59 a.m., the lights went off at the Trump Taj Mahal after 26 years, leaving thousands of middle class workers without jobs.

"The Taj would have to make close to $1.3 million a day to break even. Give me a check for $1.2 million.' He laughed. I am extremely grateful to all of the almost 3,000 employees for their hard work, especially those that stayed loyal to us during this trying period

Michael Gill Racing Issues Statement

This was more money than next the top 15 owners at

Penn National combined. I noticed how one Commissioner after another on the stand

appeared more hesitant, guarded and confused than the one before.

I went into racing knowing it was a business and I believed I could be a

champion. I would not be

bought and I would not be intimidated, that is a dangerous combination

in horse racing.

The Commission and Dillon listed three separate complaints: 1) Penn

National, 2) Jockeys and 3) the HBPA. Do you think the trainers would

tell the owners that they lost their $40,000 claiming horse for $20,000

because they were cashing a bet offshore or would they say that Gill

made it a $40,000 horse because he was cheating? What do you think?

It was my intent to have stayed in Horse Racing the rest of my life,

what better job to have than one that you love. This was a horse that raced on the grass for

the first time, slipped and clipped heals. Penn National operates

under a license, as I do. I knew at that moment that since

Krulock got me the stalls at Penn National that he could take them away.

So, if you had a couple of Commissioners that you could manipulate, I

would say it was a hell of an insurance policy and defense Attorney

Augusto was the puppet master who protects the tracks and dials in the

Commissioners.

He has commented publicly about my horses breaking down. I also quickly learned that it is possible for people to be

totally corrupt.

. Those that wanted me out would have

given their eyeballs to have come up with a bad test to make it easy to

get rid of me. The barns are a

disaster and the track is dangerous, but the casino is just wonderful!

You tell me where Penn National is spending their money. She was accused of shock waving horses by her

foreman/boyfriend and her grooms, but wrote a letter, representing horse

ownership, to the Commissioner saying I was bad for racing.

I spent $51 million dollars in horse racing, why would I need to cheat?

If someone had a better horse in the race, I would buy it. But they blamed me, not the track.

In fact in a federal trial held last week, Michael Dillon, former Acting

Executive Secretary of the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission said

under oath that he spoke with three jockeys about their concerns, one

was Clifton and he just could not remember the other two. This trainer was Stephanie

Beattie. Even when the

subject was about life and limb, he forgot. He seemed to be very

proud of that letter. He was pulling

horses to prevent them from winning. I wasn't doing

anything special. When the largest stable in the country moves in, it is cause for

concern. I have now

just introduced you to all the players.

At the trial, I listened to three Commissioners (Hamm, Hannum, and

Sweeney) and the Executive Secretary Dillon.

They believed that the Commission had immunities that they could hide

behind. Every year the track

has had major issues with breakdowns. For all those

concerned, you have taken your best shot at me and I am still standing. Only the Commission could take their

license away. Penn National has me thrown out;

they knew they did not have a reason so they gave it to the Commission. I claimed horses from people

that were cheating and winning races unfairly to defraud the betting

public. Instead what I got was an anonymous

phone call to the Large Animal Protection Society. Krulock then gave me Willie Otero to

ride all my horses and then hired Dana Whitney. It is journalism, like

the recent New York Times article and a former ESPN interview,

that have made it difficult to stay in business and impossible for me to

come back by painting me as "The Most Hated Man in Racing" where I might

have been the most honest.

I will finish by telling you that in the purest sense I am a competitor,

I find no victory in cheating. They have never come to my defense

because they are made up of horse owners and trainers that do not want

me in the industry because I am cutting up their pie. I bought horses from the big

guys 90% of the time, not the little guys. They were cheating. So the taxpayer would take the hit. It is also ironic that I was still able to race at Philadelphia

Park, but not at Penn National, even though both are governed by the

same Pennsylvania commission. This is the same organization that I have paid more

money into than any other person. That is

not what I want.

Penn National knew that I had complained multiple times about the racing

surface. I am not kidding, read the transcripts. In fact Delahoussaye

still trained and he had his other owners buy my horses that wound up

back in the same stalls that they were in when I owned them a day

before. So why would they want me out?

MANCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Michael Gill Racing today made the following statement regarding horse

racing:

Not convinced yet? If you think Penn National cares about jockeys and

horses, why are they racing at 12:00 midnight in the middle of January

instead of 12:00 noon? Do you think it is colder at midnight than at

noon? Do you think it is more likely to have a frozen track in the

middle of January? Isn't it possible it is about making money? Otherwise

they would be racing during the day. They raced a total of 820 times

during the year. "It was clean, and the horses were in

good condition."

I came into horse racing hiring the little guy and giving them an

opportunity to prove themselves.

Let's move on to the National Horsemen's Benevolence & Protective

Association (HBPA). Dillon also declared our innocence. I said that I would, but that I would not use Clifton as I

felt he was an inferior jockey. There was actually one trainer with more total

breakdowns with only about 600 starts. I watched them go up on the

witness stand, one after another saying that I had done nothing wrong. When you look at it, you see nothing but

locals. More money สมัคร fun88 than any owner made at any one

race track that year. I made $3.1

million dollars there in 2009. It seems they rely heavily on reading The

Blood-Horse magazine. Want proof? Simply walk inside of the casino and then

walk out back to the stables where the horses live.

Those same complaining owners bought them, the same complaining trainers

trained them and the same complaining jockeys rode them. There must have

been some magical wand that was waived to make them all instantly sound. Then it became very clear.

Penn National Race Track in Grantville, Pennsylvania is, like other race

tracks, a closed community. I was in horse racing for 33 years and have been told

that I have had more starts and won more races than any horse owner in

history. When he could not give me Dana Whitney, I fired him as an agent

and the jockeys he represents. I noticed how they looked frequently at him for approval

during trial.

Now I am going to get really insidious. I claimed horses for $20,000 and won for $40,000. In fact in 2008, just one year before, it had fourteen fatal

breakdowns in two weeks. Again, that's seven

breakdowns at Penn National with 820 starts, and one out of 1,400 starts

at other tracks.

I really tried to make a difference. I had a passion and a love for this industry. At the time,

horses stabled on the grounds did not get even a vet check before they

raced. They do not like cutting up their share of the pie. The president of

HBPA at Penn National at the time was Stephanie Beattie, my biggest

competitor. He must have

forgotten about an email he sent on January 24, 2010, just before my

ejection, stating that my trainers, Adamo and Delahoussaye had 3 and 4

breakdowns respectively for the year. I then asked to have Dana Whitney

ride on all the horses.

Every time I see my name it is followed by the word, controversial. My understanding

is that they do vet check now, why didn't they then? I offered to have

the state vet at Penn National check all my horses on the grounds and at

my farm, Penn National declined. No

offense to The Blood-Horse magazine, but it is not ALL that these

commissioners should know.

So Krulock had the two top racing outfits in Penn National using his

jockeys. It was not a coincidence

that it is these three jockeys that led a boycott of riding my horses in

2009.

The Commission's own investigators recognized the fact that the horses

were back running at Penn National and what I was saying was actually

true. On three

occasions Dillon happily informed the court that Penn National gave him

a letter telling him what a good job he was doing. They then said in last week's trial that they never accused me of

having sore horses.

I guess miracles can happen.

Christopher McErlean is the Vice President of Gaming at Penn National. They had nothing else. Typically, trainers survive by

finding a new owner before the old owner goes broke.

Penn National doesn't want you to pay attention to the horses; they want

you in the casino. Since that wasn't possible, Krulock turned to what he

could control...the jockeys. Look back at all my years in

racing and tell me this isn't the truth. Weeks later, Otero was suspended from

racing for making no effort for a horse to win. I have spent my career defending myself

from the corrupt, with their fear of you hearing me. I had raced over 1,400 starts in 2009 outside of Penn National

and only had one breakdown. So that is how they came at me.

There came a time in late 2009 that I fired Willie Otero. Sometimes the thing that separates the

haves and the have-nots is opportunity. To put this in perspective, if you combined all

of the race tracks across the country you might not have fourteen fatal

breakdowns collectively during a two week period. Tell

me this, what is more controversial than telling the truth?

Penn National continues to be scrutinized for their unsafe track

conditions. To my knowledge this was the only race track in the country where

all horses didn't get checked by a veterinarian before each race.

So how did I get kicked out of Penn National? I just had 2,247 horse

races without a single bad test. I was trying to create a path to

operating a successful business in the horse racing industry that I

loved so that other owners could do the same. "The slippery slope is if the measurement or action taken is

going to be on when this occurs, as it may also involve others who

people feel are not an issue." McErlean wrote this in his email, a copy

of which I have in my possession.

You may remember reading Otero saying my horses were dangerous. As reported in the Thoroughbred Times, "It

was a surprise visit, and I found nothing wrong in the facility," said

Gail Emerson, a former trainer. Krulock said that he could not do that because

Dana was riding first call for my biggest competitor, Stephanie Beattie.

All my horses were sold. They want you in the Casino at

night.

My dream was always to win the Kentucky Derby; instead this has been my

living nightmare. They could possibly lose that license if they

were operating a dangerous track. Sore at Penn, sound at Philly?

You would be interested to know how little these Commissioners know

about horse racing. They sent Gail

Emerson to my farm. They had the State of Pennsylvania do their dirty work and we

learned in last week's trial that Commission's lawyers warned them that

I could sue the Commission.

In fact they did not even investigate before or after ejecting me or

Adamo, not one of them. By now it was a moot point. I made it possible for the

trainer to make money and the owners to make money, rather than have the

trainer survive by cheating the owner. I'm

sure they were the jockeys, Krulock's jockeys, which was the reason for

Dillon's sudden loss of memory.

Penn National can't say they are concerned about horses and jockeys when

they don't even vet check horses on their own grounds. I was able to accomplish my goals because I believed they were

possible. Therefore, I think this qualifies me to speak about the

business.

I am no longer in horse racing, but I spent $51 million dollars from

1999 to 2009 on horses. The vast majority went back to Penn National. This is the exact

accusation I had made when I fired him. Out of the 100 jockeys I am

going make a guess at the other two: Dana Whitney and Willie Otero.

I'm no longer in horse racing so I have no motive to share my story

other than the truth.

I got into Penn National when John Krulock (agent for jockeys Thomas

Clifton and Willie Otero) offered me 49 stalls if I rode his Jockeys

first call. They still had major issues two

months after I left
